How to make your rental property feel like home

By Rikki Cook

Have you heard that more Australians than ever are choosing to rent their home instead of buy it? About 31 per cent, to be exact, reported a study conducted by National Shelter and CHOICE. And that’s up from about 25 per cent in the last decade or so. Are you among this so-called ‘generation rent’?

With so many more people opting to rent their home instead of buying, we wanted to offer some advice on how to make your Alexandra Hills rental property feel like home. Check it out.

Decals, not wallpaper

If you’re looking to spice up the walls, typically you’d opt for a cool wallpaper design, or even paint on a pattern of your own. But not many rentals will let you do this, so instead, opt for a decal. There are so many prints, patterns and colours to select from – even if inspirational quotes are your thing, there’s a decal for that!

Add a rug

The issue with rentals is that their floors can be a bit worn down from previous tenants. You don’t have to look at worn carpets or scratched hardwood (or gauche checkerboard tile flooring) when you pick out your own area rug! Rugs are a great way to show off your style while also adding a bit of protection from spillage or further scrapes so you can get your bond back.

Decorate with shelving and storage

These days, shelving and storage solutions don’t have to take up space – they can actually be a unique way to decorate. A shelving unit doesn’t need to be stuffed with junk, it can be a personal library or hold all your pictures and other accessories. This is also useful when your rental doesn’t have enough storage to begin with.

Put in your own blinds

You’ve probably noticed that a lot of rentals come with their own blinds. While this is useful, you’ve probably also noticed that are covered with dust and dirt from previous tenants. These are one thing that you can change in your rental. Take them down and replace them with a nicer pair or replace entirely with curtains! Interior design bonus points if you can match the curtains and the area rug!
